Join me as I narrate a walk through the SoHo neigborhood in Manhattan.

    From Wikipedia:
"SoHo, sometimes written Soho, is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, which in recent history came to the public's attention for being the location of many artists' lofts and art galleries, but is now better known for its variety of shops ranging from trendy upscale boutiques to national and international chain store outlets. The area's history is an archetypal example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socioeconomic, cultural, political, and architectural developments.

The name "SoHo" refers to the area being "South of Houston Street", a name coined in 1962 by Chester Rapkin, an urban planner and author of The South Houston Industrial Area study, also known as the "Rapkin Report". The name also recalls Soho, an area in London's West End.

Almost all of SoHo is included in the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District, which was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1973, extended in 2010, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978. It consists of 26 blocks and approximately 500 buildings, many of them incorporating cast-iron architectural elements. Many side streets in the district are paved with Belgian blocks.

SoHo is part of Manhattan Community District 2 and its primary ZIP Codes are 10012 and 10013. It is patrolled by the 1st Precinct of the New York City Police Department."

SOHO is a VERY interesting place.
I can't imagine the loss to the city if Robert Moses had gotten his way and bulldozed it, and Greenwich Village for another expressway.
      👍👍👍

New York has the best architecture of all American cities but is not even a close second to London and some of the leading European cities e.g. Paris. But New York wins easy on skyscrapers against European cities.

I lived in three lofts in Soho between 1970 and 1999, each time being evicted by real estate gentrification, soaring rents and abusive landlords trying to empty their buildings for sale.

"Hells Hundred Acres" refers to the proliferation of factories in the early 20th century which used flammable and explosive chemicals. Much of the neighborhood was also wired for DC power (one of my lofts still was when I moved in in 1977) as part of Westinghouse's battle with Edison for DC vs. AC power supremacy. DC power was inherently dangerous and prone to arcing. There were also marijuana grow operations in some of the dilapidated lofts along Broadway that used cheaper DC power for the lights that led to some intoxicating fires. The Engine 20 FDNY truck at the Great Jones St firehouse has that saying as its motto.

Pretty much all the working artists who pioneered Soho were gone by the mid-1980s because of rents. For instance, three lofts on Broome Street that friends of mine rented for $500/mo in the early 70s is selling as a triplex condo today for $60 million.

                                https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-new-york-city-loft-soho-most-expensive-apartment-2018-9

Residential Soho today is mostly wealthy Wall Streeters, trust funders and oligarch culture vultures. I stayed longer than most but left my last loft at Broadway & Bleecker in 1999 and moved to Brooklyn. It's a decision I'm still glad I made because there was no neighborhood left.

If you do this trip again, Fanelli's Bar at Mercer & Prince deserves a mention. It's the oldest business in continuous operation in Soho, since 1847. It was a blue collar bar when I lived there. Mike Fanelli was essentially my bank in my early 20s. I brought him my weekly paycheck and he cashed it and threw in a free lunch. Fanelli's has been featured in countless movies, including State of Grace with Sean Penn, Gary Oldman and Ed Harris.

All told, I'm really unhappy with what money did to this once-vibrant and eclectic neighborhood. It used to be a thriving artists community with lots of affordable retail, cheap eats and great loft jazz and other performance spaces. The MAC Blue Room was the birth of American punk. The Bottom Line was a boutique concert club only a two block walk away where you could catch Little Feat or an early Springsteen or Keith Richards sitting in with NRBQ. The best Italian fixings were just three blocks east. It's all gone. Now it's just a place to get ripped off.

After years of exorbitant rent hikes..the gallery is gone. Replaced by starbucks drivel..the gap..cheesy..AND expensive clothing shops. MOST importantly soho is now a VERY DANGEROUS place with black and latino gangs selling drugs and creating mayhem. Authorities are routinely hiding the violence and robberies throughout Manhattan. It now has the same thugs as coney island and Brownsville Brooklyn. Tacky tourists and banana republic etc. now characterize the profile of ditzy millenials and thieves looking for their money most of all. Thanks to the HORRIBLE MAYOR DE BLASIO it will take FOREVER..if ever for its panache to resurface.
